The Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (IBCB) was established in 2000 through the merger of Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry (1958) and Shanghai Institute of Cell Biology (1950). Both of the former institutions had introduced scientific advances over the last century including the total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin, the total synthesis of yeast alanine tRNA, the artificial propagation of domestic fresh-water fish and artificial monogenesis of oocytes. Based on their rich academic experience accumulated, IBCB has built a strong research base since its establishment with the national pioneered research programs in the area of biochemistry and cell biology.
As a nation-renowned institution, the IBCB seeks preeminence in exploring the fundamental knowledge about human and diseases and the application of that knowledge to advance the public good. It is dedicated to fostering innovative research discoveries and inspiring an exciting education culture for nurturing future talents.
Each year, the IBCB takes on about hundreds of research projects in pursuit of scientific questions supported by Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology, corporations and other. At present, the institution comprises 57 research groups exploring a diverse range of topics covered in life science such as:
¡õ Structure and function of protein and protein complex
¡õ Epigenetics
¡õ Non-coding RNA
¡õ Dynamic regulation of cell activity and tumor growth
¡õ Development and cell differentiation
¡õ Molecular mechanism and signal transduction in stress and immune response
The IBCB has been improving faculty construction in recent years. All the 57 principal investigators of IBCB are selected through rigorous competitions, including 11 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In addition to faculty, there are about 400 graduates and postdoctoral fellows, and more than 400 research, technical and administrative staff directly and indirectly support the research goals of IBCB.
Realizing the value of scientific advances that are made outside the institution, the IBCB has been actively promoting research collaborations in China and abroad. It has established more than 22 partnerships with institutions, universities, industry and organizations world widely including Max-Plank Society of Germany, Asian-Pacific International Molecular Network (A-IBMN), RIKEN of Japan and the University of Toronto of Canada. The collaborations and communication channels have led to exciting research opportunities.
To strengthen and promote scientific exchanges between China and other countries, IBCB has been collaborating with Nature Publishing Group in issuing the peer-reviewed international journal Cell Research monthly, which is considered as a highly respected journal in molecular cell biology field.
