Research Interests
In higher eukaryotes, most protein coding genes contain intervening sequences (introns) that interrupt coding sequences (exons). The precise and efficient removal of intron by the process of pre-mRNA splicing is a critical step in gene expression. Recent genome-wide analyses indicate that more than 90% of human genes are alternatively spliced, enabling to generate multiple mRNA isoforms. Alternative splicing can be regulated dependent on developmental stage, tissue type, disease status, or in response to extracellular stimuli. It is an important mechanism for generating protein diversity and regulating gene expression. We use multidisciplinary approaches to study mechanisms that regulate pre-mRNA splicing, especially focus on the role of specific elements and factors in alternative splicing.
